Powerboat races coming to Juno Beach Pier area this weekend
JUPITER — About 15,000 spectators are expected to line northern Palm Beach County beaches this weekend to watch about 50 powerboats skimming over the waves at up to 170 mph.
“It’s going to be a mixture of NASCAR and Motocross on the water,” promoter Scott Begovich said.
The boats, ranging from 24 to 50 feet long and costing up to $1.5 million each, will travel in a 5-mile oval course about one-half mile offshore between Carlin Park and the Juno Beach Pier.
Promoters are paying the Loggerhead Marinelife Center to mark sea turtle nests prior to the races Friday and Sunday. Spotters will fly in helicopters to watch out for sea turtles and manatees who might be in the path of the boats. Spectator boats will be allowed in a marked area east of the course.

Powerboat Racers Honor One of Their Own Who Crossed the “Final Finish Line.”
Brotherhood of Boaters Brings Offshore Powerboat Races to Jupiter
“Crossed the Final Finish Line” - Passing for One Boat Racer Creates an Opportunity For a Legacy
Jupiter, Florida - Powerboat Palm Beach, the promoters of the 2012 Palm Beach World Offshore Championship are dedicated to preserve the legacy of Jim Hauser, the original promoter of the race that is coming to Jupiter, Florida, October 18-21st, 2012.
As a second generation “Mercury Man”, Jim Hauser retired from Mercury Outboard Motors in Wisconsin after 30 years. He and Nick Scafidi, owner of Nick’s Creative Marine in Riviera Beach, shared not only a great friendship, but also the love of powerboat racing. Jim’s passion and desire to build the sport of boat racing back to its former glory was unparalleled and his respect for its history was unwavering. He was deeply immersed in creating an offshore race in Jupiter that started with an informal fraternity of “OFF” (Old Farts/Friends Forever – a worldwide retired boat racers organization) and the “Legends of Offshore” in 2009. Unfortunately, Jim passed away on March 7, 2012, with the Offshore Powerboat Races only as a dream.

Team Cintron wins title at Palm Beach County World Offshore Powerboat Championships
JUPITER — For the first two laps of the marquis race, it looked like the Palm Beach County World Offshore Powerboat Championships was going to go down to the wire.
But as the big boats battled rough seas and wind, Miss Geico throttle man Scott Begovich of Jupiter felt the starboard motor begin to lose power and knew the race was all but over.
By virtue of its win on Friday and second-place finish on Sunday, Team Cintron won the overall world championship title.
Team Cintron, a sleek 50-foot silver Mystic with 1,500 horsepower engines, was throttled by Rich Wyatt and driven by owner Hugh Fuller of Clearwater.
“This was a great race and everyone involved did a superb job in putting it together,” Fuller said. “Every member of our team did a great job getting the boat ready and it ran great out there.”
Aqua Mania won Sunday’s final race after placing third on Friday and finished third overall.
Cat Can Do 1, the only other extreme boat in the field, dropped out of the race early with mechanical problems.

Thousands come out to watch powerboats in Jupiter
Joseph Falleo sat on the rails along the walkway to Carlin Park Sunday afternoon while talking on the phone making plans for later in the day.
But in the meantime the 70-year-old said he was enjoying the day at the beach watching about 50 powerboats compete in the Palm Beach World Offshore Championships.
“It’s a nice-sized crowd. Everyone’s here for a good time,” the Juno Beach resident said. “You can’t beat it. It’s a beautiful day.”
Falleo and thousands of others gathered along northern Palm Beach County beaches, particularly between Carlin Park and the Juno Beach Pier, to watch the first speedboat race in the north end of the county since 1999. Three races throughout the day marked the end of the four-day event brought together by the Offshore Powerboat Association and Powerboat Palm Beach.
